🔍 A Brief Dive into SEO's Core Framework

Introduction
SEO isn't just about keywords; it's a structured approach to making your website shine on search engines. A solid framework ensures you're hitting all the right notes.

Technical SEO

  • XML Sitemaps & Robots.txt: Consider these as your website's roadmap and rulebook for search engine bots.

  • Site Speed: A fast-loading site isn't just user-friendly; it's search engine-friendly too.

  • Mobile Optimization: With most mobile browsing, your site needs to look and function perfectly on handheld devices.

  • Secure and Accessible Website: An SSL certificate isn't just a badge; it's a trust signal for users and search engines.

On-page/Content SEO

  • Keyword Research: The compass guides your content strategy, ensuring you speak your audience's language.

  • Content Creation: Quality content is your ticket to the top of search results.

  • Meta Tags: These snippets can boost your click-through rates as a mini-advertisement for your page.

  • Internal Linking: A well-linked site spreads authority and helps search engines navigate your content.

Backlinks

  • Quality over Quantity: A link from a reputable source can be more valuable than ten from lesser-known sites.

  • Natural Link Building: Organic is the way to go; forced or bought links can harm more than help.

  • Anchor Text & Diversified Link Profile: Variety is key. Diversify your backlinks and the anchor text to build a robust link profile.

Specialists Corner

👑 Spotlight on Specialists

Over the past seven years, I’ve helped dozens of giant e-commerce brands with SEO, from Nike to Virgin Atlantic. And in the past three months, I’ve audited Web3 businesses’ SEO scores.

Here’s my 5-step approach to SEO success:

1. Start with the audit

Any good SEO will start with an audit.

Nobody can tell you what you need to focus on without following this step in the process.

You need to identify every issue with the site before you start making changes. The reason here is to save time in the process.

First, identify everything wrong. Then, plan your processes around completing the most important actions.

After all, the point of the audit is to identify recommendations and rate them on a difficulty vs. impact matrix. What we’re looking for here are quick wins and priority long-term projects.

2. Implement the technicals

The first thing you want to implement is the technical aspects. Identifying these things is usually much easier when you’re just starting. It also makes it much harder to start ranking unless you get the basics right.

That’s why I always check the Robots.txt and XML sitemaps first. These tools help search engines crawl and index all the content on your site.

The other important technical factors, such as site speed and mobile optimization, are UX-related. Then, of course, Google considers other technical factors before ranking your site.

But you can usually get by with the four I mentioned above, especially when running a smaller site.

3. Create high-quality content

You can’t make SEO content unless you start with keyword research. Many great tools exist, such as Keyword Planner and SEMRush. But you can also use several features within Google (People Also Ask, Related Queries, etc.) for your keyword research.

Your focus should first be to make content that people want. But also to make high-quality content that people love.

High-quality content answers all the questions your readers have about the topic. I like to take it a step further and ask:

“How can you make your content 10x better than the top-ranking page?”

Asking this question can inspire you to make content that outperforms bigger sites with more authority and backlinks.

4. Build links internally and from other sources

During the content creation process, make sure to consider your links. After all, internal links are a huge ranking factor - one that people often seem to overlook.

In addition to clear navigation and sidebar menus, unique links on each page of your site help users and search engines understand how pages relate to one another. That’s why it’s important always to include links to other relevant pages in your site content.

This is a quick way to give search engines authority signals for each one of your pages.

In addition to internal links, a great backlink profile from other websites also helps your site rank. After all, Google’s original algorithm used backlinks as the primary ranking factor - and that’s why it became the dominant search engine in the first place.

I know many great SEOs who highlight the value of links from reputable organizations. And there are certainly great ways to get valuable backlinks without acting spammy.

You don’t need to worry about backlinks if you make GREAT content.

In other words, If you write it, they [backlinks] will come.

5. Reporting & Monitoring

At the end of the day, SEO needs to be monitored. You never know how long it’ll take to start ranking for a new keyword; constant algorithm updates can cause fluctuations in the rankings.

You can use tools like Google Search Console to keep an eye on new keywords you’ve started ranking for and consider whether there are any opportunities to optimize existing pages or create new ones entirely.

External tools like SEMRush and Ahrefs help you understand how your content performs against competitors in terms of keywords and backlinks generated.

Focusing your SEO process around reporting helps you quantify SEO's impact and identify opportunities for future growth.

So that’s my process! I hope that’s clear, but if not, feel free to reach out on Twitter with any questions at @HoboMojo_.
